我的数学、文学与艺术之旅

I have myself always thought of a mathematician as in the first instance an observer, a man who gazes at a distant range of mountains and notes down his observations. His object is simply to distinguish clearly and notify to others as many different peaks as he can.

Hi! welcome to Haoran Liang’s ( 浩然) home page.

As its name suggests, this website aims to document some of the beautiful scenery along Haoran’s journey through mathematics, literature, and arts.

Haoran joined King’s College London in Summer 2024 as a PhD student, under the supervision of Prof. Payman Kassaei and Prof. Fred Diamond. He is also fortunate to be aligned with the LSGNT program. Previously, he completed his Master’s at ETH Zürich and Bachelor‘s at Xi’an Jiaotong University.

He is a big fan of number theory with broad interests in its intersecting areas. He considers himself as an apprentice in the art of ``applying mathematics’’ – that is, borrowing any tools available to tackle number-theoretical problems. Currently, he is particularly drawn to the following topics

  • p-adic automorphic forms, (families of) Galois representations, and eiegnvarieties;
  • Iwasawa theory, especially p-adic L-functions;
  • geometry of Shimura varieties;
  • ······

When not struggling with mathematics, he can usually be found reading, playing badminton, or exploring museum exhibits (ideally with a good audioguide). Before the rise of AI, he greatly enjoyed playing Go; nowadays, he is learning to appreciate its artistry in the post-AI era.

Let me also post here two lovely maps of provinces in China (resp. countries all over the world) I’ve been to, generated from 神奇海螺试验场 (which contains a lot of fun stuff):

Where, I get

  • 5 pts (red) for long stays (at least 1 year);
  • 4 pts (orange ) for short stays (at least 1 month);
  • 3 pts (yellow) for trips;
  • 2 pts (green) for business;
  • 1 pt (blue) for passing by;
  • 0 pt (purple) for planned trips;
  • 0 pt (white) if I’ve never been there before.

Feb 24, 2026 Next Tuesday, I’ll be giving a talk at our lovely junior number theory seminar. Hope I won’t mess up lol.
Feb 17, 2026 I’ll be co-organizing with Lucie and Jenny the London Study Group on Number Theory summer 2026 at King’s. We’d like to work through Mazur’s classic Eisenstein ideal paper together as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of its publication.
Oct 12, 2025 Wearing a watch feels as if time has taken me hostage.
Oct 7, 2025 I am more than happy to be co-organizing - together with Lucie, Naina, and Simon - the London Junior Number Theory Seminar 2025/2026. Check out the website.
Jul 21, 2025 Learning from people is of so much fun, and thuse I’m organizing yet another (online) study group: eigenvarieties. (Tbh, I’m just can’t work through techincal details of the eigenvariety machine and construction of the eigencurve…)
